Since 1 June 2007, nationals of EU-17/EFTA member states are no longer bound by border zones. This means that cross-border commuters can pursue gainful employment in all cantons.

Citation formats

In the second quarter of 2024, around ** foreign cross-border commuters were working in the canton of Geneva. This was almost ** percent of all cross-border commuters and *** percent more than in the same quarter of the previous year.

Foreign cross-border commuters are employed people of foreign nationality with a specific cross-border commuter permit (G permit) who carry out paid work in Switzerland. Cross-border commuters must return to their main place of residence abroad at least once a week.
