In 2024, there were, on average, 422 hospital emergency room (ER) visits per 1,000 population in the United States. ER visit rates had been steadily increasing from 365 visits per 1,000 population in 1999 till a peak of 445 visits in 2017. There was a drop in ER visit rates during the pandemic, but numbers are slowly increasing to pre-pandemic levels again.
