In station-based bike sharing schemes, hired bikes have to be returned to the station from which they were picked up or dropped off at another designated hire station.
In free-floating bike sharing schemes, bicycles do not need to be returned to the same location where they were picked up but can be dropped off anywhere within a usually pre-determined geographic area.Â

As of 2023, Milan and Rome were the only two cities in Italy with **** car-sharing services in operation. While all **** car-sharing schemes in Milan were free-floating schemes, one of Rome's **** schemes was a station-based scheme.
