As of 2023, Italy had ** car-sharing schemes with free-floating vehicles in operation. The number of schemes had stood one more than the previous year. In 2020, the number dropped with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It began rising again in 2021.
In free-floating car-sharing schemes, vehicles do not need to be returned to the same location where they were picked up but can be dropped off anywhere within a usually pre-determined geographic area.
