As of 2023, approximately **** percent of all tax revenues in the EU were collected by central governments, with an additional **** percent collected by social security funds, such as pension funds and unemployment insurance funds. In more federalized European countries, such as Germany and Spain, a much higher share of tax revenues are collected by state governments, with approximately a quarter of German tax revenues being collected by federal states and ** percent of Spanish revenues coming from the autonomous communities in 2023. 

On the other hand, several European countries generate the vast majority of their revenues from central government taxes, with this particularly being the case for the small island nation of Malta, whose central government collected percent of its tax revenues.
