In 2025, Neste sold some  million metric tons of its patented renewable diesel. The Finnish oil refiner and biofuel producer commercialized a way of producing diesel fuel from vegetable oils that leads to greater quality results than the more widely practiced process of creating biodiesel. This type of renewable diesel is also referred to as HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil).
