A2A payments with iDEAL in the Netherlands were almost ** percent higher in 2022 than during the same period one year before. Transaction volume of the e-commerce payment method, first created by a domestic bank consortium involving the country's main banks in 2005, reached about *** billion euros – or roughly *** billion U.S. dollars when converted against the USD exchange rate – in 2022. iDEAL has ranked as the Netherlands' most popular e-commerce payment method for years. It originally allowed for the use of any bank-issued debit in online shopping, although it did expand to include QR payments in brick-and-mortar POS stores. iDEAL was sold in 2023 to the European Payments Initiative to become the base for a pan-European payments system, starting with a rollout in France and Germany.
