In 2023, Madagascar attained a score of ** in the Global Expression Report (GxR), which points lower than the previous year. Over the observed period, the freedom of speech and openness of the society was at its best in 2018, when it received a score of **. This was at the time when Andry Rajoelina was elected as president, which brought some stability to the country. Furthermore, the score was at its lowest in 2009, with ** points due to political crisis. A higher GxR score indicates a more open society with greater freedom of expression.
