In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.

In 2023, Botswana was the leading African country in the Global Expression Report (GxR), scoring **. Ghana and The Gambia followed, scoring ** points and ** points, respectively. South Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, and Eritrea were the countries ranking at the bottom of the list for Africa. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.
