In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.

In 2023, Nigeria attained a score of ** in the Global Expression Report (GxR). Compared to the previous year, this was three points higher. Over the observed period, the country's score peaked between 2013 and 2014 at ** points and reached its lowest point in 2021, at ** points. Although the country has a lively media scene, it is often hindered by criminal defamation laws regarding politically sensitive issues. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.
