In 161 countries, 25 indicators were used to create an overall freedom of expression score for every country, on a scale of 1 to 100 which places it in an expression category.

Freedom of expression score in The Gambia 2000-2023
In 2023, The Gambia scored ** points in the Global Expression Report (GxR). This was higher compared to the previous year, when the country scored ** points. Over the observed period, the country's score rose considerably in 2017 from ** points to ** points. This was after the current President Adama Barrow was able to win in the election against Yahya Jammeh and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) put together a military coalition to remove the latter, after refusing to leave office. GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.
