Participants were asked about their perception of the societal impacts of tourism using a five point scale where 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree. Only responses indicating strong agreement (5) and agreement (4) are represented in this dataset.

In a survey conducted in 2023 among New Zealanders on their views of tourism, the top perceived negative societal impact of tourism on communities in New Zealand was increased traffic congestion on holiday routes, with just over ** percent of those surveyed indicating this. Around ** percent of respondents were concerned about the increased cost of tourism experiences and attractions for New Zealand residents as a result of inbound tourists driving up prices.
