In 2023, the largest share of sales for herbicides, haulm destructors, and moss killers in the European Union (EU) was attributed to organophosphorus herbicides, accounting for 34.9 percent. Organophosphorus herbicides include glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide that has been the subject of controversy due to its potential health and environmental effects. The next two largest categories were herbicides based on amides and anilides at 18.5 percent and other herbicides, which include aryloxyphenoxy-propionic, pyridyloxyacetic-acid, and triketone herbicides, which accounted for 14.5 percent of sales that year.
