In 2022, the United States had the highest underground natural gas storage capacity (UGS) in the world, amounting to a total of *** billion cubic meters (bcm). Most of the UGS facilities in the U.S. are in depleted natural gas or oil fields that are close to consumption centers.
In comparison, China had a UGS capacity of just ** bcm in 2022, which was considered as a threat to the security of supply. To address this issue, China is expected to increase its UGS capacity to around ** bcm by 2030, with **** bcm of storage capacity currently under construction and a further ** bcm in planned capacity additions by 2030.
