Germany has one of the highest underground gas storage capacities in Europe. As of 2021, Germany had *** terawatt hours worth of retrievable natural gas, which was largely stored in salt caverns. This was followed by Italy, which had a working gas capacity of *** terawatt hours. Gas may be stored underground in salt caverns, depleted gas fields, aquifers, and hard rock caverns.
