The ESG investment survey was distributed by SynTao Green Finance and China SIF to both Chinese and offshore asset owners in September 2022. The survey garnered 51 valid responses, with 30 coming from Chinese institutions and 21 from offshore institutions. The percentages of these responses were 58.8% and 41.2%, respectively. Of the offshore respondents, 17 invested less than 20% of their assets under management (AUM) in China, while 4 invested between 20% and 39%.

In 2022, the main reason for asset managers to incorporate ESG factors in China into investment decisions was regulatory requirements, followed by principal and beneficiary needs. In addition to that, around ** of respondents stated they would continue to include ESG factors in the investment decision-making process even if the investment is not making a profit.
