In 2024, China continued to lead in solar power generation worldwide and in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), with an output of approximately ** gigawatt hours (GWh). India was the second-largest solar electricity producer in APAC, with about ** GWh of solar electricity output that year.Â
China’s unrivaled solar expansionÂ
China has built a solar infrastructure that far surpasses its global and regional counterparts. Installed solar capacity in China has grown exponentially in recent years, reaching approximately *** gigawatts (GW) in 2024, cementing its status as the world’s largest solar market. Solar power generation in China grew by nearly ** percent in 2024 compared to the previous year. This extraordinary pace of development has been driven by strong government support, local manufacturing dominance, and large-scale deployment of both utility-scale solar farms and rooftop systems.Â
Varied adoption rates across APACÂ
While China and India lead in absolute solar production, other countries in the Asia-Pacific region have made notable progress in integrating solar power into their energy mix. Australia leads the APAC region, with its share of electricity coming from solar reaching almost ** percent. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam has emerged as the largest solar energy producer after more than tripling its solar capacity between 2019 and 2020, thanks to competitive feed-in tariffs. Solar electricity accounts for about *** percent of Vietnam’s power generation. In contrast, Indonesia has a low solar electricity share due to infrastructure challenges and persistent coal power reliance.Â
