As of December 28, 2022, invasive group A strep in England had caused 122 deaths in the 2022/23 season. Most deaths had occurred in those aged 75 years and over, although 20 deaths had been recorded among children under 10 years of age. There has been some concern this year due to the fact that cases of scarlet fever and invasive group A strep have been higher than in recent years. Group A strep is a common bacteria which many people carry and can cause some infections. However, invasive group A strep is caused when the bacteria enters the bloodstream and can cause more serious illness.
