Weekly reported cases of invasive group A strep had been generally higher in England at the end of 2022 compared to the same weeks in the preceding five years. In week 47 of the 2022/23 season, 91 cases were reported compared to 17 in the year prior. Group A strep is a common bacteria which many people carry and can cause some infections. However, invasive group A strep is caused when the bacteria enters the bloodstream and can cause more serious illness.
