As of December 28, 2022, invasive group A strep had a fatality rate of 11.2 percent in the 2022/23 season in England. So far this is higher than the preceding year, although 2017/18 had the highest fatality rate in the last five years at 12.4 percent. There has been some concern this year due to the fact that cases of scarlet fever and invasive group A strep have been higher than in recent years. Group A strep is a common bacteria which many people carry and can cause some infections. However, invasive group A strep is caused when the bacteria enters the bloodstream and can cause more serious illness.
