Between 1941 and 1949 (but mostly before 1945), the United States War Department sent over ** billion U.S. dollars worth of aid to its Second World War allies (equal to approximately *** billion in 2020). These were sent according to the Lend-Lease Act of March 1941, which was originally a defense strategy of the United States, whereby it sent aid such as military materials, food, and oil to the Allies while officially maintaining its neutrality. When the U.S. militarily entered the war later that year, it continued to supply its allies through Lend-Lease programs - War Department shipments and transfers made up roughly half of all Lend-Lease aid, and was largely comprised of defense articles, such as aircraft, weapons, ammunition, and vehicles, as well as medical and miscellaneous equipment. Aid was largely given for free, although a small share was returned after the war.
Direct shipments made up almost ** percent of the War Department's total volume, and their transport was generally organized by the recipient country. In contrast, Commanding General shipments referred to aid sent to countries that did not have the means to transport these wares via sea, and shipments were delivered by the U.S. directly - the majority of these went to French and Chinese forces. Theater transfers made up roughly *** billion U.S. dollars worth of Lend-Lease shipments, and these usually referred to emergency or special transfers of U.S. materials in the theater of war to its allies. The final category refers to the allies' use of facilities and equipment based in the United States, the majority of which took place in 1941.
