National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) emitted an estimated *** million metric tons of methane in 2021, making it the biggest methane-emitter in the fossil fuel segment. The oil and gas giant Gazprom followed, with emissions of *** million metric tons. The top 30 companies were responsible for an estimated ** million metric tons of methane emissions in 2021, or almost half the global energy sector's total methane emissions.
