In 2021, Russia exported million metric tons of coal to European Union (EU) countries. The largest share of the exports, or nearly ** percent, was occupied by steam coal. Russia was the major import origin of coal in the EU, having supplied three times more than Australia, the second-leading coal importer to the EU in 2021. In the first 100 days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, shipments to the EU represented** percent of Russia's coal exports.
