Natural gas supply in Italy by origin H1 2021- H1 2025
After the cut-off of Russian deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian imports dropped from ** billion cubic meters of natural gas imported per semester in 2021 to *** billion cubic meters in 2025. While Algeria became the main supplier, with over ** billion cubic meters of gas imported to Italy per semester, a significant increase was observed in imports from Azerbaijan. LNG imports are expected to increase in the next years. Currently, most of the LNG imported to Italy originates in Qatar and the United States. Natural gas is the major source of electricity generation in Italy.
