The largest single primary source for electricity production in Italy in 2024 was natural gas, at approximately ** percent of the total electricity mix. Italy had one of the largest natural gas consumptions in Europe, after the United Kingdom, and was thus badly affected by the cut-off of exports from Russia in 2022, which was one of the main natural gas suppliers to Italy until then.
