As of July 2024, Democrats were more in favor of making gun laws more strict than Republicans. There was also wide support for stricter gun laws from Independents. Overall, there has been growing support for more strict gun control in recent years.
This survey was conducted shortly after presidential candidate Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally, during which a bullet grazed his ear. While Trump was unharmed, one spectator was killed by the gunman, and others injured.Â
