According to a survey conducted in 2025, **Â percent of Americans were supportive of a policy temporarily prohibiting a person subject to a domestic violence protection order (DVPO) from having a gun in the United States. Federal law prohibits anyone under a DVPO, often known as a restraining order to protect victims of domestic abuse, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. A further **Â percent also showed support for a policy allowing a family-initiated extreme risk protection order (ERPO) to temporarily restrict guns from a relative who they believe is at risk of harming themselves or others. An ERPO is issued by the court when someone is at risk of violence, including suicide and assault.
