The surveys were conducted days before the start and days after the end of the John C. Depp, II v. Amber Laura Heard civil defamation trial, where Depp sued his former wife. The male actor is known for starring the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series, one of the highest-grossing movie franchises ever. Fellow actor Will Smith also experienced a decline in popularity after slapping comedian Chris Rock on the stage of the 94th Academy Awards ceremony in March 2022.
