The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a monumental piece of U.S. federal legislation prohibiting racially-motivate voter discrimination and ensuring all citizens have equal access to participate in the democratic process. As of May 2024, just about half of Americans considered the Voting Rights Act still necessary in the U.S. today. Of the remaining surveyed adults, seven percent believed the Voting Rights Act was never necessary in the U.S.
