In 2024, the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC consumed around *** million metric tons of tap water.Â
Semiconductor manufacturing is highly water‑intensive because ultra‑pure water is essential at multiple stages of the production process. It is used to clean silicon wafers, remove microscopic contaminants, and rinse away chemical residues during photolithography and etching. Even the smallest impurity can compromise chip performance, so large volumes of water must be treated to extremely high purity standards. As TSMC continues to scale up production of advanced nodes, this need for ultra‑clean manufacturing environments contributes significantly to its overall water consumption.
