In 2021, hydropower - including (pumped) storage, and run-of-river hydropower - accounted for roughly one-third of the electricity system flexibility capacity worldwide. Nevertheless, fossil fuels combined were responsible for the highest share of global flexibility capacity, with a combined share of 63 percent.
