Online voting is a dematerialized voting system, which allows people to vote remotely, from any location, via a computer, a smartphone, or a tablet with an Internet connection. In France, this system already exists in professional contexts, for example in the case of elections of staff representatives, in certain financial contexts, such as during a company's General Assembly, as well as in certain political cases, such as a citizen consultation or a primary. However, it is not used in national and local elections.
When questioned on this subject at the end of 2021, the first reason mentioned by the French likely to prevent them from using this system, was the fear of possible rigging or manipulation of the results by the organizer of the vote.
