In 2022, the source stated it made two changes to the categories used in previous years. These include a combination of "credit cards" with "charge/deferred debit cards" and the split of BNPL from "POS financing" (which itself was added as a new category in 2020). The latter change was made to atone for the "growing importance of BNPL". This seems to have been reverted in 2023 - for the year 2022.

In 2024, the "debit card" and "prepaid card" categories were combined into a single category called "Debit and Prepaid Cards".

The figures have been taken from several publications. No figures were available for 2018 as the source did not release any reports that year.

Citation formats

Cashless payment options remained dominant in Swedish POS, especially as mobile wallets saw their market share increase over the years. Debit cards and credit cards combined for a total market share of more than ** percent in 2023, although the first was used less often than in previous years. The share of mobile wallets is notable in Sweden due to the growing popularity of domestic payment app Swish. This cooperation between the domestic central bank and the country's largest bank can be used in both e-commerce and POS payments. By 2023, millions of Swedes used Swish. COVID-19 measures accelerated the use of this payment method, even though it was already rolled out well before the pandemic started. In 2025, digital wallets accounted for 28 percent of the total transaction value. By 2030, this share is projected to increase by a eight percentage points.
