Recently-discovered or actively-monitored variants may be overrepresented, as suspected cases of these variants are likely to be sequenced preferentially or faster than other cases."

Citation formats

As of January 2022, the share of COVID-19 cases corresponding to the Omicron variant in Spain amounted to nearly 85 percent of the country's analyzed sequences of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A month earlier this figure was equal to 54 percent of cases studied in the country. The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 - the virus causing COVID-19 - was designated as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization in November 2021. Since then, it has been rapidly spreading, causing an unprecedented increase in the amount of cases reported worldwide.
