In 2021, Indonesian industrial oil palm plantations covered around *** million hectares in the areas designated as permanent production forest and convertible production forest. Their coverage is wider than the smallholders' plantations in the same area. In comparison, smallholders covered twice the area of industrial plantations in protected forest and conservation areas. Forest estate in Indonesia includes conservation forest, protected forest, and production forest. These areas are not supposed to be planted with oil palm, and therefore making this practice illegal.
