The production volume of low-malt beer ("happoshu") in Japan reached around * kiloliters in fiscal year 2023, a significant jump following the reclassification of new genre beer as happoshu. Happoshu refers to beer-like beverages with a malt content below 50 percent in Japan. The low-malt alcoholic beverage was considered a cheaper alternative to beer until tax rates were raised on malt beverages.
