Following a series of high profile instances of police brutality and racial inequality in the United States in 2020, several sports leagues displayed messages promoting social justice, such as ’Black Lives Matter,’ on their courts or fields to bring awareness to the situation. During an August 2020 survey in the United States, 24 percent of respondents said that this message was very effective in bringing attention to police brutality and racial inequality.
