Shifting energy landscapeÂ
The energy conversion sector has been the primary source of carbon dioxide emissions in Japan. While fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal remained the largest sources of electricity generation, the share of renewable energy reached a decade-high of nearly 23 percent. This shift reflects Japan's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuel imports. The country’s ambitious climate goal aims for a 46 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2013 levels, as well as carbon neutrality by 2050.
Challenges and criticisms
Despite progress in reducing its overall greenhouse gas emissions, Japan faces significant challenges in achieving its climate objectives. The country's industrial sector, a major contributor to its economy, remains energy-intensive and accounts for a large portion of final energy consumption. While Japan has invested in climate-friendly technologies and aims to increase its nuclear and renewable energy share, international critics argue these measures may be insufficient to eliminate all greenhouse gases by 2050 as the country clings to fossil fuels.
