If not treated, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS): a condition that damages the immune system, making it unable to defeat diseases. 

HIV in France

In France, the number of new HIV cases has been relatively stable over time. The highest number of cases was registered in 2014, when people were newly diagnosed with HIV. During the following years, the number decreased gradually, and had a sudden drop during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. HIV is more common among men than women, and the most affected age group is the one consisting of people who are 35 to 54 years old. 

AIDS in France

The number of people diagnosed with AIDS, the condition that results from HIV-infection, has been decreasing over the last decade. Whereas nearly ** new diagnoses were registered in 2010, this number had dropped to *** in 2020.
