HIV/AIDS in the U.S. - Statistics & Facts
In 2022, there were around 38 thousand new HIV diagnoses in the United States. This was a slight increase compared to the few years prior, but still a significant decrease compared to the number of diagnoses during the 1980's when HIV/AIDS was one of the biggest health issues in the United States. Nowadays, when asked what the most important health issues are in the United States, HIV/AIDS is not among the top ten responses, and in 2019 just one percent of survey respondents said it was the single most important health issue facing the nation. Although there is still no cure for HIV, modern treatment known as antiretroviral therapy (ART) can halt the progression to AIDS and reduce the risk of transmission to others allowing those who are HIV positive to live just as long as those without HIV. However, HIV still disproportionately affects certain demographics and prevention and testing are still necessary.
