* Expected mortality is a metric that came from the Be-MOMO model, otherwise known as the Belgium Mortality Monitor. This model predicts all-cause mortality over an extended period of time, looking at the normal/average mortality levels. This is then used for the calculation of the excess number of deaths (observed minus expected).

While not all deaths are due to the coronavirus, mortality rates exceeded predictions during the coronavirus pandemic in Flanders. For instance, the weekly death toll from April 6 to April 12 in Flanders amounted to 2,197 fatalities, whereas, according to predictions based on the last five years, the number of deaths during that week should have amounted to 1,262 deaths.
