As of March 2022, the number of incorporated medical institutions in Japan amounted to approximately **** thousand in total, of which around **** thousand were associations and *** were foundations. The medical corporations system in Japan began in 1950 and is recognized under the Medical Law enacted in 1948. With an approval of a prefectural governor, medical institutions, such as hospitals or medical, dental, and nursing care clinics, can incorporate themselves and operate as non-profit organizations. Two types of medical corporations are approved in Japan: associations and foundations.
