Pharmaceutical industry in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan remains one of the world's largest pharmaceutical markets, yet its relative global position has been steadily contracting. Japan's share of global pharmaceutical revenue has declined while North America's has grown, highlighting a structural shift in where the industry's value is being created. Domestically, demand continues to expand:Â the prescription drug market reached 11.5 trillion Japanese yen (approximately 76 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024, its highest value on record, and total pharmaceutical production value exceeded 10.25 trillion yen (~68 bn USD). Yet this trajectory, driven by one of the world's oldest populations, does not translate into a growing share of the global innovation economy, thus pointing to a gap between Japan's healthcare needs and its influence on the industry's international development.
