The marine water quality standards in Mexico allow a maximum Geometric Mean (GM) of 200 Most Probable Number (MPN) of enterococci per 100 milliliters.
Two beaches located in the city of Acapulco topped the ranking of the dirtiest beaches in Mexico in 2019. According to a study, Playa Suave and Playa Hornos registered 191 and 183 enterococci per 100 ml, respectively, the highest concentration of this type of fecal bacteria during the Easter period. The city of Puerto Escondido was also found to have fecal contamination problems, particularly in the beaches of Puerto Angelito and Playa Principal, which ranked third and fourth in the list of dirtiest Mexican beaches during Easter 2019.
