Domestic tourism in the U.S. - statistics & facts
Domestic, or local, tourism refers to residents traveling within their own country, as opposed to international destinations. From beach trips in California to hiking in the Appalachian Mountains, the United States offers its citizens a wide range of domestic travel opportunities. In 2022, domestic travel spending in the U.S. reached nearly 920 billion U.S. dollars, up from the previous year’s total of 868 billion U.S. dollars. Like the increase in domestic travel spending, the share of U.S. adults that traveled domestically from October 2022 to July 2023 increased as well. In July 2023, 39 percent of U.S. adults stated that they had traveled domestically in the past month. Additionally, nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults said that they planned some form of domestic leisure travel in the next 12 months.
