Globally, human consumption of antibiotics increased by 46 percent, from 9.8 to 14.3 DDD per 1,000 population per day, between 2000 and 2018. This increase was led by low- and middle- income countries, which experienced a 76 percent increase in antibiotic use during the same time frame, while consumption rates in high-income countries remained stable.
