Escherichia coli is a bacteria causing most bloodstream infections and urinary tract infections.
All EU Member States and two EEA countries (Island and Norway) reported data from invasive isolates. Roughly 76 percent of the participating countries had a high national representativeness, in terms of covered geographic areas, included acute care hospitals, and microorganisms causing infections.
*The aminoglycoside group includes only gentamicin and tobramycin from 2020 onwards.

Share of invasive resistant E. coli in EU/EEA 2017-2021, by antimicrobial group
E. coli is the leading cause of community-acquired bloodstream infections and urinary tract infection. As of 2021, resistance to aminopenicillin antibiotics was the most common form of E. coli antibiotic resistance in EU and EEA countries, with **** percent, followed by resistance to fluoroquinolones. This statistic displays the percentage of invasive Escherichia coli isolates resistant to antibiotics in EU/EEA countries between 2017 and 2021, by antimicrobial group.
