Respondents were asked to select between "wife", "wife if anything", "together as a couple", "husband if anything" and "husband".
Questionnaires were distributed to respondents during individual visits and, in exceptional cases, mailed to absent households. Completed questionnaires were collected in person or submitted by mail or via the online survey system of the government.

According to a survey conducted in July 2022 among married women in Japan, the majority of respondents, around **** percent, claimed to be the decision maker in issues regarding childcare and education. In contrast, only less than *** percent stated that their spouses alone are in charge of dealing with childcare issues.
