Original question: "Between you and your spouse, which of you decides on the following?"
Respondents were asked to select between "wife", "wife if anything", "together as a couple", "husband if anything" and "husband".
Questionnaires were distributed to respondents during individual visits and, in exceptional cases, mailed to absent households. Completed questionnaires were collected in person or submitted by mail or via the online survey system of the government.

In a survey conducted among married women in Japan in July 2022, over ** percent of respondents claimed to be the person in charge of planning the household budget. In contrast, only around ** percent of surveyed women stated they made budget decisions together with their spouses.
