In 1950, the infant mortality rate in Sri Lanka was approximately one hundred deaths for every thousand live births; meaning that, in 1950, ten percent of all newborns would not survive past their first birthday. Infant mortality would steadily decline in Sri Lanka as general sanitation and access to healthcare improved, with the fastest period of decline falling in the decade between 1955 and 1965 (where it dropped by almost a third).
